Robben Island:
Alternatively, you can take a tour to Robben Island. The former maximum security prison in Table Bay off Cape Town is now a natural monument and a national memorial, as South Africa’s first dark-skinned president Nelson Mandela served a large part of his sentence here. From the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront, ferries take you to Robben Island at 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, depending on the weather. You can expect the tour (including the trips to and from the island) to take about three and a half hours.
Township Tour:
There is also the possibility to book an excursion to Khayelitsha. This is the largest township just outside Cape Town. On a guided tour of the township, young people will tell you about their lives in the township and how involvement in a rowing club has changed their lives. In this tour you will be picked up by our partner at the hotel and after the tour you will be driven back to the hotel.
Cuisine Safari:
Enjoy a variety of traditional Cape Town dishes on this walking tour of Cape Town’s historic city center. This two-and-a-half to three-hour walking tour introduces guests to the historic center of Cape Town. Your guide will introduce you to traditional local foods that will immerse you in the history of this city.
Jazz Safari:
Cape Town is an incredibly musical city. This is the city where music is most imaginative in South Africa. In part, this is due to the natural environment that fosters creativity. But mainly it is based on the history of the city and the diversity of people and cultures that have settled here. On this special music tour, you will dive deep into the city’s jazz music by visiting local jazz musicians in their homes.
Part one is a visit to a jazz musician for dinner with music and entertainment. Part two is a visit to a second musician for a nightcap or to a jazz venue for the late set. The experience is personal and deep, full of music, engagement and fun. It is a unique opportunity to meet local musicians outside of the club stages, and a great way to learn more about Cape Town and the lives of the people who live in it – through the music.
Our hosts include young and old Cape Town musicians, all composers and performers. These are the musicians who define the sound of the city.
