Epupa Falls is an impressive natural attraction in Namibia that can be visited all year round and is an important habitat for animals and plants in the region. The lush vegetation on the banks of the river provides habitat for baobabs, fig trees and makalani palms, among others, as well as numerous bird species, monkeys and crocodiles. The waterfalls themselves are particularly impressive in the rainy season, when the river carries an especially large amount of water and numerous side falls occur.
There are various activities that can be done in the area, such as exploring the waterfalls on a hike or observing the numerous bird species. Accommodation near Epupa Falls offers a variety of accommodation options, including cosy lodges and a secure campsite.
Epupa Falls can be reached comfortably by vehicle in about 3 hours from Opuwo, except during the rainy season when four-wheel drive vehicle hire is recommended. The best time to travel is just after the rainy season, when the Kunene River has its highest water level and the spray from the waterfalls is most impressive. Visitors also have the opportunity to get closer to the Himba and purchase handmade souvenirs made by the inhabitants to help them make a living.
